Supreme Court Has Rare Pair of Vacancies
By The Associated Press The last time there were two openings at the Supreme Court, William H. Rehnquist was a Justice Department lawyer advising President Nixon on how to handle the rare opportunity. Rehnquist, who was named to fill one of those openings, died Saturday night of cancer, giving President Bush a rare pair of vacancies at the high court. Here is a list of some of the multiple Supreme Court vacancies._1971: Justice Hugo Black stepped down on Sept. 17 and Justice John Marshall Harlan retired on Sept. 23. Lewis Powell replaced Black and Rehnquist took Harlan's seat on Jan. 7, 1972. _1941: Justice James Clark McReynolds retired on Jan. 31 and was replaced by James Byrnes on July 8. Chief Justice Charles Evan Hughes retired June 30 and was succeeded by Justice Harlan Fiske Stone on July 3. Stone was replaced by Robert Jackson on July 11. _1922: Justice John Clarke resigned on Sept. 18, and was replaced by George Sutherland on Oct. 2. Justice William Rufus Day retired on Nov. 13 and was replaced by Pierce Butler on Jan. 2, 1923. Justice Mahlon Pitney was disabled on Dec. 31 and was succeeded by Edward Sanford on Feb. 19, 1923. _1910: Justice David Brewer died on March 28 and was replaced by Charles Evans Hughes on Oct. 10; Chief Justice Melville Fuller died on July 4 and was succeeded in the top spot by Edward White on Dec. 19. Justice William Henry Moody was disabled on Nov. 20 and replaced by Joseph Lamar on Jan. 3, 1911, while Willis Van Devanter took White's place as associate justice on Jan. 3, 1911.
