MARAL Pro-Choice MichiganLANSING- MARAL Pro-Choice Michigan and the pro-choice majority are outraged by the attempt of anti-choice groups to side step the legislative process, the Governor, and the people of Michigan, through the citizens’ initiative to ban abortions. This citizens’ initiative is simply the latest attempt to undermine women’s reproductive freedom, and aims to frighten Michigan citizens into believing that the law is needed to stop late-term abortions. It is clear that the petitioners’ real intent is to ban all abortions and endanger the health, safety, and basic rights of Michigan women. In fact, Michigan law already provides a ban on post-viability abortions, with protections to save the life and health of the mother.
Through the petitioners’ own admission, the measure will never actually reach the ballot or the voters of Michigan. Proponents of this initiative are calling it the “People’s Override” when in fact they need to garner support from only 8% of Michigan’s voters to bring this back to the legislature - a percentage which is not truly representative of the people’s voice in Michigan. Indeed, poll after poll reveals that the majority of Michigan citizens are pro-choice.
