Board Of Canvassers Approves Abortion Ban Petition
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 11, 2003 Contact:Rebekah Warren (517) 327-4707 BOARD OF CANVASSERS APPROVES ABORTION BAN PETITIONStatement from MARAL Pro-Choice Michigan’s Executive DirectorLANSING- In a unanimous decision today, the Michigan Board of Canvassers approved language for a broad abortion ban initiative petition. The wording of the abortion petition is the same as that of Senate Bill 395, a measure vetoed by Governor Granholm earlier this year. Rebekah Warren, Executive Director of MARAL Pro-Choice Michigan, said. “This initiative petition has false and deceptive wording claiming to merely define when life begins, when in fact it seeks to criminalize some of the safest and most common abortion procedures user early in pregnancy. The petitioners real intent is to ban abortions and endanger the health, safety, and basic rights of Michigan women.” “Anti-abortion groups have banded together to keep doctors from making the best and most appropriate decisions to protect the health and lives of the women of Michigan,” Warren said. “MARAL Pro-Choice Michigan opposes such infringement on women’s constitutionally protected rights and will fight any and all measures to undue such fundamental freedoms.” MARAL Pro-Choice Michigan was founded in 1979 as a state affiliate of NARAL Pro-Choice America. MARAL Pro-Choice Michigan is a statewide, non-partisan membership organization that works through the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancies, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal and safe abortion.
