Legislation to Watch

In 1973, the Supreme Court handed down its opinion in the landmark case of Roe v. Wade. In doing so the Court recognized, for the first time, that the decision whether or not to terminate a pregnancy should reside with the woman, not politicians or the government. And yet, over 35 years later, the promise of Roe remains unfulfilled.

Today, opponents of choice have tremendous influence. They sit in county courthouses and on hospital boards. They run medical schools. They write state laws. They govern statehouses. And they hold the balance of power in the United States Congress.

This session alone twenty-one pieces of anti-choice legislation have already been introduced in the Michigan House and Senate.  While we continue to face anti-choice majorities in both chambers, we are also privileged to have a number of dedicated pro-choice legislators actively working to introduce pro-active legislation and defend our right to reproductive freedom.  To date, these pro-choice caucus members have twenty-three bills before the Michigan House and Senate.
