The threats to reproductive rights in Michigan have never been greater.  At the same time, our oppurtunities have never been more abundant.  The Michigan legislature is anti-choice, but our allies in the legislature are strong and are working hard to protect our right to choose. 

 

Within hours of the United States Supreme Court upholding the Federal Abortion Ban (create link to page), anti-choice legislators introduced a package of bills aimed at restricting a woman's right to choose that bring us within inches of an outright ban.  Make no mistake - an outright ban is on the horizon if we do not act now (create link).  Michigan has a pre-Roe abortion ban in place.  The Supreme Court has already laid the groundwork to overturn Roe.  If Roe is overturned, Michigan will be under a full out abortion ban.

 

Outstanding legislators like MARAL's former director Rebekah Warren, who earlier this year introduced a resolution supporting our Prevention First (create link), are fighting to promote the principals of Prevention First like comprehensive sex ed in schools, contraceptive equity, access to perscriptions and ensuring legal access to abortions.  Leaders like Rebekah and many others in Lansing are leading the charge to protect a woman's right to choose, but those of us on the ground - the grassroots - need to support them.  We need to let them know we support Prevention First and we need to let them know we are calling for a state Freedom of Choice Act that will knock out the pre-Roe ban on abortion.
