Oppose Senate Bill 1059!

Modified: 04/02/2008

We need your help to urge Governor Granholm and the Michigan Legislature to Oppose Senate Bill 1059!

The extreme right in the Michigan legislature is at it again, this time jeopardizing young women’s health and safety. Seeking to make Michigan’s current parental-notification law more onerous for women under 18 years old, the Michigan Senate has recently passed Senate Bill 1059. This bill would allow judges to investigate the more personal details of a young woman's life who, for reasons of violence or other circumstances, can’t turn to her parents for help and has to seek a waiver from the court.

Advanced as an attempt to prevent so-called “judge-shopping,” this unnecessary and dangerous bill is a direct attack on a young woman’s health and safety.  Furthermore, such legislation disregards those situations in which a young woman is put physically or emotionally at risk by government-mandated disclosure of her pregnancy and yet again inserts politicians into delicate family situations.

Please use the letter below to write to Governor Granholm and your Legislators to urge them to oppose Senate Bill 1059 and instead join us in promoting commonsense, proactive policies that work to both help prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the need for abortion, without jeopardizing women's health and privacy.  Unsure of who your Michigan State Legislators are? --Letter to Decision Makers—

Dear [Decision maker],

As your constituent, I am strongly urging you to oppose Senate Bill 1059, a bill that needlessly makes it more difficult for women under 18 years old to receive a waiver of parental consent to obtain an abortion.

Such additional legislation puts young women in potentially violent or abusive situations at even greater risk and yet again inserts politicians into delicate family situations.  Most young women turn to their parents, but there are those who can't and proposals like SB 1059 put their health and safety at greater risk.

Instead of backing this unnecessary and dangerous bill, I challenge you to join me in supporting commonsense proactive policies that actually work to prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the number of abortions in Michigan, such as abstinence-plus sex education and contraceptive equity.

Thank you for your consideration.  I will be watching your vote carefully and look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
