Oppose Senate Bill 776!
We need your help to urge Governor Granholm and the Michigan Legislature to Oppose Senate Bill 776! The extreme right in the Michigan Legislature simply never tires of interfering in a woman's right to choose. This time, instead of working to solve the many important challenges facing Michigan, they have introduced a bill to ban safe and often medically-necessary methods of abortion care used as early as 12-15 weeks in pregnancy. Modeled after the "Federal Abortion Ban" upheld last year by the reconfigured U.S. Supreme Court, this bill is a duplicative waste of limited taxpayer resources and a dangerous attempt to insert state prosecutors into medical decisions best made by a woman and her doctor. What's more, the ban contains no exception to protect a woman's health and is opposed by nine medical professional organizations, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Nurses Association and the American Public Health Association. Despite this frightening reality, the Michigan Senate has already passed this bill and it's now in the House Judiciary Committee. Please use the letter below to write to Governor Granholm and your Legislators to urge them to oppose Senate Bill 776 and instead join us in promoting commonsense, proactive policies that work to both help prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the need for abortion, without jeopardizing women's health and privacy. Unsure of who your Michigan State Legislators are? Click here to find out. --Letter to Decision Makers— Dear [Decision maker], As your constituent, I am strongly urging you to oppose Senate Bill 776, a bill that threatens to ban safe and often medically necessary abortion methods used as early as 12-15 weeks in pregnancy with absolutely no exception for a woman's health. Instead of backing this dangerous attempt to insert state prosecutors into medical decisions best made by a woman and her doctor, I challenge you to join me in supporting commonsense, pro-active policies, such as abstinence-plus sex education and insurance coverage for birth control, that help prevent unintended pregnancy and reduce the need for abortion in Michigan. Thank you for your consideration. I will be watching your vote carefully and look forward to your response. Sincerely, [Your name] [Your address]
