Take Action
Thirty-five years ago, untold thousands of women were living in silence and fear.
This year we commemorate thirty-four years of Roe v. Wade, recognizing the freedom to choose is poised to become the first civil right in the course of American liberty to be taken away. Over three decades ago this landmark event – a milestone in the long march of the women’s movement - recognized a woman’s fundamental freedom to make her own choices about her reproductive health without government interference.
An entire generation of women has grown up in a nation under the protections of Roe and has never had to face the threat of a back alley abortion. Many expect the protections afforded under Roe to remain in place. A woman's right to choose is imperiled and complacency is a most dangerous enemy.
Even with Roe still on the books, women today confront profound questions when faced with an unplanned pregnancy and have fewer reproductive rights than they did when it was handed down in 1973. Since 1995 alone, Congress has voted 148 times on matters affecting reproductive rights and all but 25 were lost. Now is the time to secure the right to choose for all women of this country through federal legislation that protects abortion rights from governmental restrictions. There is no question that the legal right to choose protects women’s lives, health, and autonomy and contributes to women's quest for equality.
Freedom of choice is in great peril and MARAL Pro-Choice Michigan along with our National organization, NARAL Pro-Choice America, is dedicated to making it a paramount issue in the minds of the American public and has kicked-off a historic, multi-million dollar mobilization of pro-choice America. We will awaken the pro-choice majority and enlist them all in the fight to protect our rights.
Pro-choice Americans must understand that the right to choose will not survive unless we act to protect it. For this historic anniversary, the only fitting way to celebrate the freedom to choose is to save it. |
